Firefighting helicopter crashes into a lake during water pickup

French firefighting helicopter crashes into Brittany lake during water pickup

Sunday, August 24, 2025. A water bombing helicopter working for the Finistère fire service crashed into the lake at Rosporden while descending to refill its bucket during wildfire operations. The aircraft, locally known as Morane 29, is an Airbus H125 Écureuil contracted to SDIS 29. Both the pilot and an on board firefighter escaped and were taken to Quimper hospital. Officials reported no fatalities.

In short:

  1. What happened: During a water pickup, the helicopter contacted the surface and then settled into the lake.
  2. Who was on board: One pilot from the private operator and one SDIS officer. Both are safe.
  3. What authorities did next: Pollution control booms were deployed and the lake area was restricted while teams planned the recovery of the wreckage and opened an investigation.

What we know so far

Witness video shows the helicopter approaching low over the lake to refill its bucket when it appeared to lose control near the surface. Local officials opened an inquiry to determine the exact sequence of events and any contributing factors such as wind shifts, water conditions, or mechanical issues.

The mission and the aircraft

Morane 29 is used each summer to support SDIS 29 with rapid water pickups from nearby lakes and ponds. The H125 Écureuil is a single engine light utility helicopter widely used in aerial firefighting with an external bucket.

Environmental response

Fire crews placed pollution control booms around the wreck to contain any fuel or oil. The mayor asked residents near the lake to keep windows closed if they noticed odors, and boating and fishing were temporarily restricted while recovery work proceeded.

Recovery and investigation

Heavy equipment is scheduled to remove the helicopter from the lake, followed by water quality checks. A technical investigation will review flight data where available, pilot reports, maintenance records, and witness footage.
